Exhilarating excursions full of amazing scenery which takes you into the escarpment on a foot path winding up the hill through jungle forest past impressive rock formation where you can have a breathtaking view over the plains of Tsavo east National park, mountainous Tsavo west national park, Standard gauge railway, Nairobi -Mbs Highway and Settlements of the Taita people. On a Safari journey you can visit a Baobab tree said to be over 450 years old and was used to hide by a German widow whose husband had been killed during the 1st World war in Mwakitau, from her hiding she would shot at the British soldiers as they passed by. The tree has deep marks on its bark from shooting by the British soldiers on their efforts to kill the German widow, when they found out that she was hiding in the tree. It is the most-shot-out tree during World war 1 and it still has the bullet holes and marks showing up.

WORLD BURIAL SITES

Voi cemetery found next to voi police station is 20 minutes’ drive from Tsavo Eco lodge. It was put aside for the 1st World war victims some of whom had already been buried elsewhere.One of the casualties buried in the graves was Australian Volunteer Lt W.Dortnell V.C who was awarded a post humous Victoria Cross. He was initially buried in Mwakitau graves. He was injured on his left leg during a military action in Mwakitau on 03/09/1915, but he refused to be evacuated until his injured fellow soldiers were evacuated. While lying down, He continued fighting and by the time he was being evacuated he had killed seven German soldiers and they were lying dead next to him.

THE KINO CAVES (KENYATTA CAVES)

A Safari to Mwanguwi near Wundanyi town would be ideal to see the caves because of their significance both in culture and political formation as the freedom fighters including the first president Jomo Kenyatta hide here when fighting the colonialists and attracts both local and foreign tourists to date. 1st World War related Historical information and Sites The Taita hills having been the battle ground for the 1st World War and has been left with historical war sites in areas such as Mwashoti Encampment, Mbuyuni;Salaita and the fortifications near Maktau all showing the events of the World war 1 which was fought for over 100 years ago is a beautiful history with a guided trip by our experienced and trained personnel.

THE 1ST WORLD WAR GUN SHOT

It is great to learn about this and see the house that stands still in Taveta town 3 hrs drive. The first gun shot that led to the start of the 1st world war was fired from a police station which later served as a Hospital by the then acting Taita/Taveta colonial District Commissioner in mwakitau on 15/08/1914, the gun shot killed a German soldier whose remains are still buried in World War Cemetery. WRAY MUSEUM SAGALA. A 3 hrs trip to the first recorded Anglican Church service in Taita (St Marks church) in Sagala 60by 40feet was on Sunday 08/08/1909. Today it is a museum (Wray Museum) and the only one in Taita that has artefacts of the rich Taita culture.
